Choosing a citizenship test app

Most citizenship test apps are the same list of questions with a multiple-choice quiz bolted on. That is fine for a first pass and useless for the last two weeks. Since the real civics test is oral and free-response, an app that only ever shows you four options is training you for a test that does not exist.

Here is what actually matters, so you can judge any app — including ours — on the same criteria. You can try the full practice engine free on this site before installing anything.

Five things that matter

  1. It has both the 128-question 2025 bank and the 100-question 2008 bank, and lets you switch.
  2. It offers flashcard or free-response practice, not just multiple choice.
  3. It tracks individual questions across sessions, not just a score per quiz.
  4. It can show questions in your own language beside the English.
  5. It works offline.

Everything else — themes, streaks, leaderboards — is decoration.

1. Both question banks

This is the one that disqualifies most apps. Two versions of the civics test are live at the same time, and which one you take depends on whether you filed Form N-400 before or on/after 20 October 2025. An app that only carries the 100-question list is out of date for every new filer. An app that only carries the 128 is wrong for everyone still in the older queue.

Check before you commit: can you switch versions in the settings? If not, the app is guessing on your behalf.

2. Oral-style practice

The real test is an officer asking you a question out loud. Multiple choice measures recognition; the interview measures recall. They feel similar and they are not, which is why applicants score 90% on quiz apps and then blank in the interview room.

A good app gives you a mode where the answer is hidden until you have committed to one — a flashcard with honest self-grading. Use multiple choice to learn, and that mode to verify.

3. Per-question tracking

A score of 8/10 tells you almost nothing. What you need to know is which questions you keep missing, across weeks, so those come back more often and the ones you know cold stop wasting your time.

Look for a mastery view broken down by category, not just a history of past scores.

4. Your own language

If English is not your first language, seeing the question in your language next to the English is not a nice-to-have. It is the difference between memorising sounds and understanding what you are being asked. And unless you qualify for a 50/20, 55/15 or 65/20 exemption, you will have to answer in English — so you need both at once, not one or the other.

5. Offline access

The study that actually happens is the study you do in gaps — on a bus, in a waiting room, on a break. Those are exactly the places with bad signal. An app that needs a connection to load the next question loses most of its useful moments.

How ours is built

US Citizenship Civics Test is free on the App Store and Google Play, and it is built against the five criteria above:

  • Both banks, switchable under Settings → Quiz Version: all 128 questions of the 2025 version and all 100 of the 2008 version, taken verbatim from the official USCIS lists.
  • Mock interviews in the real format — 20 questions with a 12-question pass mark on the 2025 version — plus quick quizzes and a daily challenge.
  • Mastery tracking per category and per question, with statistics showing where you are strong and where you are not.
  • Multilingual study in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, Japanese, Swedish and more, always alongside the English.
  • Fully offline, and it uses your state and ZIP code to handle the location-dependent questions.

The app is free to download and the core studying is free. A subscription unlocks PRO features — category quizzes and advanced statistics. The practice engine on this website is free with no account and no limits, so try it here first and only install the app if it is doing something you want.

Frequently asked

What is the best app to study for the citizenship test?

The one that carries both official question banks, lets you practise without multiple choice, tracks which individual questions you keep missing, shows questions in your own language, and works offline. Judge any app against those five criteria rather than its star rating.

Is there a free citizenship test app?

Yes — US Citizenship Civics Test is free to download on the App Store and Google Play, with a paid tier for category quizzes and advanced statistics. You can also use the full practice engine on this website free, with no account.

Do citizenship test apps have the new 128 questions?

Many still only carry the older 100-question 2008 list. Since applicants who filed Form N-400 on or after 20 October 2025 are tested on the 128-question 2025 list, check that any app you use lets you switch between the two versions.

Is a citizenship test app enough on its own?

Almost. An app cannot look up your own governor, state capital, senators and representative, and it cannot tell you who currently holds the four national offices — check those on the official USCIS test updates page. It also cannot replace practising out loud with another person.
