The practice test below uses the real USCIS question bank and the real pass mark.
It is free, needs no account, and you can take it as many times as you like. Choose the 2025 version
(128 questions, 20 asked, 12 to pass) or the 2008 version (100 questions, 10 asked, 6 to pass) depending
on when you filed Form N-400.
One honest caveat that most practice tests will not tell you: the real civics test is
oral and free-response. An officer asks a question and you answer out loud. Multiple
choice is easier, because seeing the right answer among four options jogs your memory in a way that a
blank silence will not. Use multiple choice to learn the material fast, then switch to flashcard mode to
check whether you can actually produce the answer unprompted.
Pick a mode and start. Your progress is saved in your browser, so questions you keep getting wrong
come around more often.
What your score means
The pass mark is 60% on both versions, but the two are not equally forgiving. On the 2008 version you
need 6 of 10, so a single lucky guess can carry you. On the 2025 version you need 12 of 20 — over twice
as many correct answers, which is much harder to fluke.

What to do next
Below 60%
Not ready
Stop taking full tests. Study one category at a time until you can hold 70% in that category.
60–79%
Borderline
You would probably pass on a good day. Drill your missed questions until the same ones stop appearing.
80–94%
On track
Switch to flashcards so you are producing answers, not recognising them. Look up your state-specific answers.
95–100%
Ready
Practise out loud with another person. Re-check the current officials before your interview.
Aim well above the pass mark
Scoring exactly 60% in practice, at home, relaxed, with four options on screen, is not the same as 60% in
an interview room. Treat 90% in practice as your real target.
A practice routine that works
Week one — find your gaps. Take one cold mock test. Do not study first. Whatever
you miss becomes your list.
Weeks two and three — category drilling. Twenty minutes a day on one section.
American Government first, since it is more than half the bank.
Week four — produce, do not recognise. Move to flashcards and say every answer out
loud before revealing it. This is the step most people skip and it is the one that matches the real test.
The last week — the moving parts. Your governor, your state capital, your senators,
your representative, and the four current-officials questions. Then take full mock tests until you are
clearing the pass mark comfortably every time.
Study the whole bank on your phone
All 128 questions of the 2025 version and all 100 of the 2008 version, offline, with mastery
tracking per category and study in your own language. Free on iPhone and Android.
Practising on your phone
The web test here is deliberately complete rather than a teaser — you can work through the whole bank
without paying anything. What the iPhone app adds is the things a web page cannot do well: it works
offline, it keeps a long-running record of your mastery per category rather than per session, it has a
daily challenge to keep a study streak going, and it can show every question in your own language beside
the English.
If you are studying on a commute, in a waiting room, or anywhere without reliable signal, the app is
the better tool. If you are at a desk, this page does the same job.
Frequently asked
Is this citizenship practice test free?
Yes. Every question in both official banks is available here at no cost, with no account and no limit on how many times you can take it. The civics questions themselves are public-domain material published by USCIS.
How accurate is this practice test?
The questions and accepted answers are taken directly from the official USCIS lists — the 128-question 2025 version and the 100-question 2008 version. The number of questions asked and the pass mark match the real test. The difference is format: the real civics test is oral and free-response, not multiple choice, so flashcard mode is the closer simulation.
What score do I need to pass the citizenship test?
You need 12 correct out of 20 on the 2025 version, or 6 correct out of 10 on the 2008 version. Both work out at 60%. Aim considerably higher than that in practice.
Can I practise the citizenship test online without signing up?
Yes. Nothing on this site requires an email address or an account. Your progress is stored only in your own browser.
