A mock test is only useful if it copies the real format. The one below does: it draws
from the official question bank, asks the same number of questions the officer will ask, and applies the
same pass mark — 20 questions and 12 correct on the 2025 version, or 10 questions and 6 correct on the
2008 version.
What no on-screen test can copy is the pressure of answering out loud to a stranger. The second half
of this guide covers how to rehearse that part, which is where most of the remaining risk sits once you
know the material.
Set the version to match your N-400 filing date, then run a full mock test. Take it seriously — no
notes, no pausing, no looking anything up.
How the real thing differs
Three differences are worth planning for.
It is oral and free-response. There are no options on a screen. The officer says the
question and waits. If you have only ever practised multiple choice, the first cold question is a shock.
It stops early. The officer asks questions until the outcome is settled. Reach 12
correct on the 2025 version and it ends there, possibly after only 12 questions. That is normal and it is
good news, not a sign that something is wrong.
It happens inside a longer interview. Before the civics questions the officer has
already put you under oath and started going through your N-400. You will have been talking for a while,
in English, before the test starts.
You can ask for a repeat
If you do not catch a question, ask the officer to repeat it. That is allowed and it is not counted
against you. Answering the wrong question because you guessed at what was asked is the avoidable mistake.

Rehearsing the oral interview
Practising out loud is uncomfortable, which is exactly why it works. Three ways to do it, in order of
how closely they match the real thing:
Flashcard mode, spoken. Read the question, say your answer out loud, then reveal.
Grade yourself honestly — "I nearly had it" is a miss. This is the minimum.
Have someone quiz you. Hand a friend or family member the official question list
and have them ask twenty at random. They do not need to know the material; the answers are printed.
Record yourself. Answer twenty questions into your phone's voice recorder, then
listen back. You will hear the hesitations and the answers you only half know.
Rehearse the small talk too. The officer assesses your spoken English from ordinary conversation —
how you got there, what you do for work, where you live. Being able to hold that conversation comfortably
matters as much as the civics answers.
How to know you are ready
Not one good score. The signals that actually mean something:
You clear the pass mark on three consecutive mock tests, not one.
You can do it in flashcard mode, producing answers rather than recognising them.
You can answer out loud to another person without long pauses.
You know your own state's answers — governor, state capital, both US senators, your
US representative.
You have checked the current officials on the USCIS test updates page within the
last week or two.
